Quint gets it

Learn from one of the best in Quint Studer.

He ain't your ordinary hospital consultant. In fact, he probably wouldn't call himself a consultant at all; he's a "Fire Starter" and a "Coach." From a high school GPA of 1.3 to Special Ed teacher to hospital President to Founder of the Studer Group, this man has a genuine passion to make a difference in healthcare and on society. In his first COO role at Holy Cross Hospital, he took his hospital's patient sat scores from 5% to 94% in one year. At his first Administrator position in Baptist Hospital, he decreased employee turnover from 30% to 12% and also founded the Baptist Leadership Institute. It's hard to argue with results like that, and Quint tells us exactly how to do it in our hospitals.

In my view, this book is well-balanced between motivation and practical to-do's. In fact, I think the magic of this book is how well Quint covers both issues: the heart (the emotions/psychology, human nature) and the mind (hard-nosed focus on hard-core results). I think most hospital leaders could pick up this book and actually put some or all of the principles into practice, even in difficult working environments. And that is exactly Quint's intent.

I heard this book mentioned in a podcast as the speakers favorite book. I purchased and read the book and did find many good principles and take aways. I did not realize that this book was written specifically for the Healthcare Profession. I have looked at the "Hardwiring" of the 9 principles presented and they would just not work in my field.
If you are in a hospital or related field this would probably be a 5 star book. I've gleaned some good information and will consider it a good book for my purposes.

A "How-To" for Excellence

Quint has an amazing way of always connecting, always reducing the complexity and showing the way to simplicity in the pursuit of excellence.
His advice and coaching tips are real-world and real-time and shouldn't be thought of as exclusive to healthcare. It would be difficult to make it to the end without identifying one or two leadership-enhancing behaviors....ready to be put to use tomorrow.
Having attended his speaking engagements, I can share that "Hardwiring Excellence" is like an extended conversation with Quint.

Helpful, but not great

Well, let's see. I originally picked up this book with fascination that a book written after Hoekema's Created in God's Image (One of my all time favorites!) could write a book on Biblical anthropology and not reference Hoekema once in the end notes. And in comparison, this certainly is not nearly as good as Hoekema. With that being said, Sherlock makes some excellent observations on culture and the way we should think about people made in the image of God. He is outstanding in the issue of constantly addressing the effect of sin on mankind- it is our greatest problem, and he is right to spend time on that. He critiques some outside viewpoints well including Marxism, and also critiques prevailing Evangelical problems like excessive individualism and a lack of tithing. The weaknesses are several however. First and foremost, although he seems clear on sin and person of Christ, he never engages on how the gospel is applied to us. Is it by faith and repentance? He references them, but leaves no clarity on whether we must trust Christ to be saved. One could be Barthian (Neo-Orthodox views of Universalism) and read this book and come away without Jesus claims to exclusivity. I understand that this isn't on soteriology but the gospel must be proclaimed in some measure- this is of first importance (I Cor. 15). Second, his egalitarian views of men's and women's roles is an axe that he grinds on at every available chance. While being sensitive to my brothers and sisters who disagree, political correctness when applied to Scripture has never historically ended well and tends to arrive in liberalism. My suggestion: read Hoekema first, it's more in depth theologically but still easy to understand. Read Piper and Grudem on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, and then read this book with a discerning eye and keep the good observations that Dr. Sherlock makes.

The stinker from an otherwise excellent series

It is baffling how out of place this book is in this series of otherwise excellent, solid books, not unlike the book on revelation in Berkouwers "Studies in Theology". While not claiming that this book is without some value, and I appreciate his choice of topics, his almost complete failure to discuss sin, human depravity, and the freedom/bondage of the will as specific topics makes this volume no little dissapointment. In light of both the historic importance of the doctrine and the extravigant expressions of depravity and sin in the the last 100 years, it is hard to take this book too seriously when it fails to look at the center of these issues: the human heart. Another complaint is the failure of the author to take a stand for the Biblical priciples regarding the roles of men and women in the family and church (not surprising since, as the preface mentions, his wife is also and ordained minister in the Anglican chucrh). Sadly, it is ALMOST appropriate to retitle this book "The Doctrine of Humanism."

Don't waste your time with this book

I had to read this book for a seminary class. I was very disappointed. I really enjoyed the rest of the series, but this book just didn't cut it. While Sherlock had some interesting things to say in the first half, the second half fell apart. The author came close to comparing the blood of Jesus with a woman's period at one point in the book. Very disappointing.

Need a short trip away from reality?

I'm embarrassed to say that I had heard of author Shel Silverstein and had also heard of "Where the Sidewalk Ends" BUT had never picked up a copy and read it. A friend recently quoted from the book which stirred my curiosity as I'm always on the lookout for great books for my 8 year old great niece. I bought the book based on what my friend said as well as reviews posted on Amazon.com. I always read the books I get for my G niece before giving them to her as I so enjoy kids and young adults literature as well as what I normally read. I'm half way through "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and already know that I will be buying more of Mr. Silverstein's books for my G niece. The poems are creative and humorous with the drawings completing the "story". I know my niece will enjoy the book and probably her parents too! This is the type of book to be read again and again whenever you need a short trip away from reality.

Sent as a gift

Children in the U.S. are SO lucky to have books at their fingertips. That is not the case in other countries.

Last year, I sent my friends new son a few books for his first birthday. I had no idea the books I sent were his very FIRST ONES! Apparently, literature is SO taxed, it is not easily available. I take children's books for granted. I think we all do.

Shel Silverstein brings back wonderful memories from my daughter's childhood and fortunately, she has passed on her love of reading to her own two daughters. I could not imagine childhood without certain books and I had to send "Where the Sidewalk Ends" to my friends for Christmas. This book is one that they can all enjoy (and it may be a bright spot in learning English for their wonderful little boy!).

I wish I could send more books to them. And I will. Over time.

Wonderful Goodnight Story Book!

This is a great book that I truly believe all kids will cherish. It's fun to read to them, and the jokes are silly enough that adults will laugh too. Reminds you of the child within. Shel Silverstein really hit kids books out of the park. He was a home run winner! This is as essential a book to kids as his other book The Giving Tree, although it's full of small poems for bed time and much lighter at heart. Definitely recommend this author for kids.
