Paula Figoni is a food scientist and associate professor at the International Baking and Pastry Institute in the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. I wrote a 17 page term paper during culinary school in one night with only this book! This book opened my eyes to the incredible chemistry behind baking. If you want to understand why things react the way they do in this medium, I strongly suggest this book!

How Baking Works

This book is as it is discribed. I thought it would give more explaination of why certain things happen when baking. For example if you use cold ingredients like eggs in baking, your cake may bake with a dome in the middle. I didn't find any explainations such as this, only differences between ingredients such as AP Flour and Cake Flour. But not what would happen if you used one as opposed to the other. I was looking for a book that would help me to understand why certain things happen, like why my cake sometimes rises light and airy as opposed to not rising and being heavy. I guess more the results of the chemisty of baking .

About the Author

Dr. Andrea Pampanelli has more than 15 years of environmental and 5 years of Lean experience working for GKN Driveline. During her career in GKN, Dr. Pampanelli developed more than 100 EHS & Lean research projects applied to GKN in partnership with Brazilian local universities and won more than 15 excellence awards from GKN Driveline, GKN Group, and OEM customers. She has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, an MBA in environmental management, a master’s degree in production engineering from UFRGS in Brazil, and a specialization degree in safety engineering by Unisinos in Brazil.

Neil Trivedi is a highly experienced strategy and transformation consultant and qualified Lean expert, with broad experience across global platforms within the automotive, aerospace, food, FMCG, transportation, biomedical, and public sectors. He has been instrumental in helping organizations improve their performance by collaboratively tackling complex business problems and in designing and implementing solutions that demonstrate tangible benefits to businesses.

Dr. Pauline Found is a course director for MSc in continuous improvement in public services and a senior lecturer in Lean operations at the University of Buckingham. "My father was the Imam; my father was the mosque." The world Hannah was born into meant her father has absolute power over nearly everyone, especially his family. A sometimes dark and brutal tale, the book is overwhelmingly a tribute the resilience of one woman's soul.

Raped by her father from the age of five, Hannah Shah lived in a child's pretend world to escape the horrors of her home. With imaginary Loneliness Birds from heaven coming to her rescue, she was able to survive beatings, rape, and days of being locked in a dark, silent cellar without food.

Her mother and brothers turned a blind eye to the nightmare that became her life. With the help of a school teacher, Hannah escapes. Chased, threatened with murder, and moving to dozens of houses to escape her tyrannical father, Hannah blossoms into a caring, compassionate woman, choosing to laugh, to love and to forgive.

An intense look at the inner workings of the Muslim faith how beliefs can become easily distorted and how courage comes in many forms. The Imam's Daughter is a touching and poignant novel, and author Hannah Shah, a former Muslim, is a tribute to what being a Christian means.

Remarkable Young Girl Finds Healing

I read this on a recommendation by Chuck Colson's Breakpoint ministry.
This story was daunting to my soul, as it deals with a man who is more interested in keeping his religious authority than he is with any idea of gracious protecting or nurturing of his family. His proud and haughty opinions isolate his family particularly the women. The family's reluctance to question or stand up to the father's bullying allows for the long term abuse that Hannan is forced to suffer.
It is a difficult situation when a community's allegiance and trusting willingness to their religious leader, (in this case their Imam) allows no way to question his integrity. Women who are seen as little more than baby makers have little opportunity to discuss freely or advance themselves. In this case the Imam made religious claims that were a guise to his own prejudice, ignorance and abusive behavior.
The father in this story is evil. As I read this out loud to my husband we found ourselves boiling inside for what Hannan was made to suffer. We vocally cheered when she found a way out.
Although the father's iron grip on his community wreaks havoc, the author notes that NOT all things about the culture, community and belief system are evil. "Yet there is much that needs to be broken down, built up again, and mended." Pg. 263. This is not the story of every Muslim family. But it is the story of one.

I am thankful that Hannah mustered up the courage to speak out in spite of what it cost her personally. May God continue to heal and build her up.

This collection of Hebrew short stories contains the work of the great modern Hebrew prose writers (except for Agnon) in Europe and Israel. With consistently good translations and an excellent introduction and notes by editor Abramson (Jewish Learning & The Academy, Gordon & Breach, 1995), the work begins with Sefarim in the beginning of the 20th century and includes contemporary writers and lesser-known women and Sephardic authors. The sorrows and problems of the Jewish people in their exile and return are combined with works of personal anguish and happiness to reveal the great scope of Hebrew literature. The stories encompass different literary styles and techniques. For example, Dvora Baron's "Sunbeams" is a wonderful story of humanity and redemption set in the shtetl world of European Jewry. The writers of the Palmah generation are ably represented by Yizhar, Megged, and Shahar, among others. Shabtai's "The Visit" recounts beautifully the old days in Tel Aviv. Arranged in rough chronological order, it charts the movement from a naturalistic tradition, heavy with political themes and social commitment, through the emergence of a New Wave--led by A. B. Yehoshua and Amos Oz--that stressed more individualistic themes and even questioned Zionist ideology. I am the translator of "Cinema," by Yitzhak Ben-Ner, which appears in this anthology. [A collection of powerful stories by Yithak Ben-Ner, RUSTIC SUNSET, also translated by yours truly, has just been published by Lynne Rienner Publishers and is available from Amazon. Try it: you'll become a Ben-Ner fan, I assure you!] The uniqueness of this new Oxford anthology is its consistently high quality. The works it choses are the best short fiction that modern Hebrew literature has to offer, and the translations are readable and idiomatic. the book covers the breadth of modern Hebrew literature from the 19th century into the 1990's. You'll find pivotal wirters such as Uri Nissan Gnessin, who wrote in stream of consciousness years before Joyce; Nobel Prize winner S.Y. Agnon; Amalia Kahana-Carmon, known as the Israeli Virginia Woolf, whose style has been often described as untranslatable -- our translators in this collection do a superb job, but I'm sure that the compulsive Ms. Carmon drove the the translators crazy!; Dahlia Ravikovitch; Aharon Megged and the late David Shahar (both of whose translated works have been especially celebrated in Europe but scandalously ignored by the American literary establishment); Ruth Almog; and more famliar names such as Amos Oz, A.B. Yehoshua, Aharon Appelfeld and David Grossman. By delving into this collection, the English reader will for the first time ever, be able to sample modern Hebrew literature from the same vantage point as that of educated Israelis, who view the writers in this collection as the building blocks of contemporary Israeli culture. This expansive and inclusive collection of Hebrew short stories in English translation provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the development of the short story in Hebrew from the early days of Mendele Mokher Sefarim's daring experiments in Hebrew fiction, right down to modern Israeli writers, writing Hebrew in a Jewish State. In between we can view the development not only of writing but of a diverse cultural milieu in the making. As Jews moved from Diaspora dwellers writing in a language recently "dead" but suddenly revived, to Jews living in Palestine in an emerging nation, to Israelis in a Jewish State, we can see the normalcy of life and fiction assert itself. From the rather self conscious attempts by early writers to use Biblical models and idioms to tell their stories, we read writers honing their craft according to European and the American models of literary expression, but with a unique local flair, expressing specifically Hebrew or Israeli concerns. And unlike other, older, collections of Hebrew short fiction, this one includes both "canonical" male figures like Sefarim, Brenner, Amichai, Oz, Yehoushua, but also female writers like Katzir and Liebrecht. All in all, this collection is superb.

Glenda Abramson, in the introduction to her "Oxford Book of Hebrew Short Stories", gives a fairly history-book account of the development of modern Hebrew letters, with the one note that "throughout the development of Hebrew literature writers have been nominated as representative because they exemplify a political consensus or a dominant ideology and many others have been omitted because they are perceived not to have done so." Her own candidate for greatness, Yitzhak Oren, failed to make this roll-call of social realism because while others were drawing the portrait of the new state he was indulging in "Kafka like fantasies". Off-hand, this does not seem such a unique bias. Kafka was hugged into the bossom of European literature in an era of absurdism and, let us never forget, as a dead saint. His meticulously prosaic depictions of the fantastic, the reports of an insurance man, were fine parables for the shook-up faiths of the post-concentration camp dissenters against ideology. Wherever else in the globe such fantasy has sold, such as South America, there was also a political bias toward resistance in the audience. Abramson's man Oren has suffered, like science fiction writers and other writers of "speculative" fiction in the U.S. and other lands of true believers, by not being taken seriously because he saw through the emperor's clothes.
The trouble with making one's only dissent to received opinion one "revived" writer and a handful of stories which "appear for the first time in an anthology in English translation...chosen primarily for their aesthetic quality, their narrative texture and colour" is that by accepting to an extent the burden of the cannon you become damned by failing to adequately represent it. If you will give an account of a literature consisting of its most famous practitioners - the "Usual Suspects" school of anthologizing - you cannot then simply omit a major figure with the note that to the anthologist's "great regret Agnon is not represented..because the Institute of Hebrew Literature was unable to negotiate terms for the reproduction of his story "The Garment". " This won't do - either construct an argument for certain stories or do not have an argument at all - do not presume to represent the firmament and then announce, by the by, that you could not quite get clearance to use Orion.
The translations, provided one assumes by that same institute, are not stunning. Two of the cannonical stories, by Hayim Hazaz and the father of the Hebrew story Mendele Mocher Seforim, are pieces the present author had to parse out word by word at school and for examinations, hence he has views on their potential in this language. Little things, like translating Mendele's town name which is a play on the word beggar as "Beggarsburgh" and all its citizens subsequently as "Beggarsburghers" - now, this is a solution to a problem which situates the language of the translation in neither England nor the U.S., nor, I suspect, any other English speaking province. If the aim of a translator is to reproduce the given text, brick by brick as it were, convincingly in another language, then the new edifice must be located somewhere in the language - if it has slang it must be the slang of a place and time, if it has references it must have references that make sense somehow within the history and geography of the host language. This invention, as an example, does the worst thing possible by attracting attention to itself as a "translation", thereby undermining the credibility of the narrative voice, and still not solving the problem - if the speaker were American it would be "Beggarsville", if English, perhaps, "Beggarsbrough" - a late twentieth century translator of Hebrew into English is probably aiming at an American market (where most of the world's English speaking Jews are) but, effectively, is writing a trans-Atlantic English, and these are the problems which translating into a language while (presumably in Israel) not living in it, can present.
Such matters aside, Abramson's anthology shines with less than ideological pieces such as Dvora Baron's "Sunbeams" - a heartrendingly simple account of the unremitting darkness of humanity, back in the shtetl, where an orphan girl is passed hand to hand by people who do not want to take responsibility for her eating mouth, winding up an outcast, surviving on scraps and odd jobs, with the only remnant warmth "a few words of endearment that came back to her from the mists of her early childhood" and allow her to pet a cow, just calved for the first time and torn from its off-spring, with whom she forms a bond that leads her to prosperity ad some standing in the community before she dies, alone but no longer unseen. In stories such as these humanity outgrows the confines of a nationality and the shtetl could be a place where something, like nothing, happens anywhere.

The ultimate "encyclopedia" of self help.

I have to admit that I'm a fan of Tal Ben Shahar. His first two books plus his Positive Psychology training course have positively influenced my life.

He even influenced my MBA research orientation when I choose the "Sense of Coherence" , a coping model that Tal advocates, as the core of my MBA Leadership research thesis , which made it initially controversial to my school (dealing with psychology rather than pure business) . Yet it was a great academic experience with a lot of contribution to my resilience.

When this book came out and I passed through its table of content, I didn't expect much more than a "me too" version of his compilation book "Even Happier".

To my surprise, this book turns out to be the best & most practical work for Tal!

Not only that the format of the book is easily accessed through the "lessons" presentation style that can be chosen by the reader according to situational needs, but also the book is written in a style that combines scientific perspectives with inspirational stories & creative metaphors in a literary style.

On the other hand, I find at least 30% of the psychological interventions & advises in the book as novel & never presented before by Tal: Lessons like Loving-kindness meditation, deceptive brain messages, listening to silence and many more, were indeed A-ha moments to me.

The greatest lesson I learned was this: It seems that over- analysis of oneself through dealing with self help books can be a source of misery rather than happiness, real happiness comes from focusing outward rather than onward. That was a real sound advice to me , as a self-help addict reader.

By the end of the book, I realized that Tal has covered almost everything in the realm of the empirically tested self help & P.P techniques.

That's why now I choose to call this book the "encyclopedia" of self help.

The only downside of this book is that it has too much of "good things" that can be sometimes overwhelming. To benefit from the book, I had to go picky & choose what sounds more influential to my life.

But yes, Tal has done it again.

A distillation of psych 1504

I have watched the entire lecture series from psych 1504 on you tube. This short, easily read book distills the wisdom of those lectures into a great source of strength and happiness that can be referred to as often as one likes and whenever needed to bring about a positive attitude adjustment.

permission to be human,learn to fail, and throw the knapsack over the wall are some of my favorites along with the upward spiral of appreciation and gratitude.

Tal, I hope you put together the online masters degree in positive psychology. I have already read many of the books you referenced in class and welcome the opportunity to learn more. I am almost sixty years old, but can still learn new tricks.

About the Author

Peter Walker studied Classics and Early Church History at Cambridge University and has done extensive research at the post-doctoral level on Christian attitudes toward Jerusalem. Peter is now professor of Biblical Studies at Trinity School for Ministry, having previously taught at Wycliffe Hall within the University of Oxford. He has led many study tours to the Holy Land. His books include Holy City, Holy Places? (OUP); Jesus and the Holy City (Eerdmans); and In the Steps of Jesus (Zondervan). His most recent book is The Story of the Holy Land (Lion Books).

Fantastic for Christian Discipleship and Group Discussions

The Jesus Way is an exciting book that presents the Christian life for readers at any stage of their spiritual lives from the novice to the mature. Walker offers a substantive overview of the gospel of Jesus Christ and how we respond and obey it faithfully. The 12-chapter book consists of building blocks of the Christian faith divided into two main sections based on the Biblical chapters Luke 24 and Acts 2.

The Jesus Way guides readers into new life through Jesus Christ. Walker will settle for nothing less than his readers becoming new creations in Christ and living a new life. He writes that "We are to be an `Easter people,' bringing the resurrection light of Jesus into our local worlds--into God's world." As Easter people, Jesus becomes the center of our lives.

The book can speak to seekers of Jesus or new believers and instruct them into the new faith and life in Christ. Each building block of the book also serves as a step in becoming a Christian. Walker presents the truth of Jesus Christ and confronts readers with their own sinfulness and need for forgiveness that only comes through repentance and the cross of Jesus. He writes, "The cross of Jesus is God's answer. It is the place where we are healed, the place where sin is dealt with once and for all, the place where the barrier between us and God is decisively removed...We can never say `goodbye' to the cross, or move on to seemingly more important things."

Walker emphasizes that the Christian, through the work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, is called to live a holy life. Christians ought to be experiencing the Holy Spirit's work in and through their lives. The Jesus Way can be a helpful resource to facilitate God's work in the believer's life. Walker highlights Spiritual disciplines and truths of the Christian life and asserts that "If Jesus is not Lord of all, then he is not Lord at all." In an eloquent and appropriate tone, Walker shows readers how to live with Jesus as Lord of their lives.

The Jesus Way is thoroughly Biblical and congruent with the apostolic teachings and historic voice of the church. This is a life-changing message aimed at fulfilling the Lord's call to his body,

Throughout the book, Walker assures readers of God's generous grace by which we are saved and helped each day of our lives. He writes, "The Christian life is truly meant to be Christ's life - Christ's life lived in and through us. We will therefore need Jesus' grace each and every day - not just for our forgiveness but indeed for any living at all!"

This is a meaningful and helpful study for individuals or groups. There is a companion dvd that accompanies the first six chapters that has the author and other theologians discussing the topics. Our groups appreciated those discussions and found them helpful.

What a great and needed book

I never rate over 4 stars so I really enjoyed this book. I recently had an opportunity to meet the author and was impressed by his passion and knowledge of the subject. If someone is looking for a framework for themselves, or to teach others in the Christian life, I would say that this is a great foundational book. This book would easily fit in with a Sacramental framework or stand alone. Refreshing.
