Thierry Zarcone is Senior Researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris, based at the Ecole Practique des Hautes Etudes, Paris. Beautiful, profound and prophetic.

This was one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read and one that I know I will read over again. I longed to be transported back to 1927 when the Cape was so much less a tourist attraction than it is today; when there was still a sense of wilderness but not isolation. Henry Beston's use of words to "paint" a picture and his insight as to how we have separated ourselves from the rest of nature is at once profound and prophetic. Mrs. Beston stated that he would spend an entire morning just to get the right words for a single sentence. It shows. To me, few authors today have the skill of using the English language as Mr. Beston, among those are David McCullough and Eric Larson. While Henry Beston was not a naturalist he captured the essence of man's position in the natural world of which we are a part. The only down side to this story is that in 90 years we still have not learned enough from our mistakes and that there are those who still ignorantly dismiss the messages that the earth is sending us. If we continue on the path we are going we will not destroy this planet we will only destroy ourselves and the earth will reclaim her land, seas and skies and go on without us.

An almost-forgotten classic

This book was written in the 1920s and is a classic of the wonders-of-nature style. In this, it most resembles works like John Muir's My First Summer in the Sierra and Edward Abbey's Beyond the Wall. Beston records a full year spent in a tiny, two-roomed house (a shack, really) on the Eastern Shore of Cape Cod, a place renowned for having a lot of weather, whose fury he records with great eloquence. He wrote about everything he saw there -- the sea, sky and birds, mostly, about also about the few human residents of the area, including its tiny complement of fearless Coast Guardsmen (they appear most vividly in a gripping account of a shipwreck). Beston describes everything he sees in simple but graceful prose that, on occasion, rises to a kind of rapture. My favorite passage (which I have framed on a wall) rejects the common notion that animals are fundamentally inferior to humans: "...for the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings, they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners in the splendor and travail of the earth." It's a wonderful read.

A Celebration of the Cape Cod Seaside in the Tradition of Thoreau

This near-classic account of the author's year alone in a self-built cottage on Cape Cod's shore, sometimes dips a little into purple prose. "Then time gathered like a cloud, and presently the stars began to pale over an ocean still dark with remembered night." These descriptions often sound lovely and poetic, but they might tend to roll off your back like water off a duck, just because they contain no sharp particularities to stick in your mind.

Nevertheless, this is undeniably a stirring account of the ritual of the seasons that Beston observed from his solitary outpost on the beach near Eastham, Massachusetts. And in among the occasionally too general sonorities, there are many, many truly telling metaphors, as when he describes a wind that was "a thing to search the marrow of one's bones."

I initially felt a little frustrated reading his descriptions of his sand and sea surroundings. I wanted to turn the page and find a big glossy picture that would immediately convey the details to me. But then I realized that such a longing was a laziness, and that it was actually better to have to create the picture myself, to build it slowly from Beston's words. This made my experience of nature more interactive and ultimately more satisfying. I was forced to use my imagination. It was like listening to radio, rather than having the completed pictures of TV always there - bam - in front of me. Ultimately my having to create the scene myself in my mind's eye made me concentrate more and appreciate better the beauties being described.

However, I do think that a better map of Beston's location might have been helpful to orient the reader at the outset. I remained a little confused about the juxtaposition of the different features of the sea, the beach, the dunes, the marshes, the runnels and inlets, around him. The small, cramped picture supplied at the front of the book doesn't suffice.

Comparisons between Beston and Thoreau are apparent on every page. The way Beston usually capitalizes the word "Nature" reflects the Transcendentalists' pantheism. But when Beston was writing in 1926, he didn't quite seem to grant equal divinity to all living things. He has a remarkable feeling for the beauty of the lives of birds, but he doesn't always seem to be as awake to the miracle of fish. When he receives the gift of a live cod that a member of the coastal patrol found on his doorstep, Beston views with equanimity the struggling fish as it's hung on his clothesline, its continued puffing a testament to its freshness for dinner. Modern sensibility might be veering a little more to a realization of the suffering of fish as well as birds and mammals.

In other areas though, Beston's words might have been taken from today's headlines. He deplores the oil slicks that were killing so many birds. The main source of the slicks in 1926 was oil refineries. Many refineries then were simply loading the dregs of their refining process onto tankers that then took the greasy cargo out past the shoals and spilled it into the ocean. Beston becomes uncharacteristically a little more specific and scientific in his writing when he describes how birds that got coated with this oil almost always died, in part because of the way the oil created big separating creases in their plumage, exposing their bodies to the frigid air and water.

Beston is prematurely optimistic about the way in which these spills were being curtailed. He said the situation was much better than it had been some years before, and he had every reason to believe that there would soon be no more oil slicks on the oceans to despoil Nature of its glories.

In some other uncharacteristically analytical passages, Beston explains how one incredible night of strange phosphorescence marking his footsteps along the beach might have come about.

On the whole though, you won't garner much scientific information about the species that Beston observes in his seashore retreat, nor about the geological processes that form the landscape there. This no Discovery Channel exposition. But you will come away from this very personal essay of a book with a heightened sense of the beauty, complexity, and mystery of one of Nature's most awe-inspiring ecological niches.

A Perfect Match for Those in Search of Better Hires

I've got to say, this book is refreshing in its approach to the hiring process, from resourcing talent to qualifying and the hiring process. Mr Erling explains his strategic philosophy well, with the right mix of candor and wit, research and anecdotal support. As a read, the book reminded me of Malcolm Gladwell's approach to writing (and I say that as a powerful compliment) in that both authors manage to keep the reader engaged and even entertained as they edify us on their business perspectives.

I gleaned a lot from this book. Well written, easy to follow, and filled with solid advice.

Highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to hire quality people who are committed to your company's success.

step by step directions to implement immediately

One of the basic rules in life seems to be that taking time up front to do something right will mean you get better results. Match makes this point time and time again and gives you the exact steps you should take to help hire the right person for your company. We all know how painful and expensive a wrong hiring decision can be to fix. I felt that Match laid out a plan that made sense and that is easily repeatable, in fact many of the initial steps can be used again and again in future hires. I feel my company will have an advantage over my competition by using the Match process to hire our future employees.

Not ideal for a small business without HR department. Too slow and time consuming.

Being new to hiring for our small business (6 employees) I tried to follow the steps and this book. Long story short is that the process took too long and did not work well for us. The process it outlines is extremely long and time consuming and it seems like it would be more relevant to a larger organization with at least one or two full time HR staff. The problem for us is that we only had one person working on the hiring process due to our small size - me. I had to juggle this task along with my job as director of marketing and we were already understaffed. As an example of a time consuming action it says you need to do reference checks by calling all three references and doing 30 minute phone interviews. This advice was terrible because its tells you to spend about 2 hours or more conducting phone interviews with past supervisors and that is unrealistic and a waste of time. Especially when you're screening dozens of candidates.

He returns to the original sources to take stock of the "historical Columbus" and then traces the growth of the "heroic Columbus." Overall, his portrait of Columbus is not flattering. Most fascinating is his tracing of the Columbus legend from its origins in the 16th century to the present. The story of his transformation from a simple sea captain to a tragic hero is an engaging one, well told and copiously documented here. Absorbing & fascinating

A must-read for the student of Columbus and the conquest of the New World that tells the story of the Great Discoverer as it has never been told before. Be prepared, for it shows Columbus as the product of a sickly and dispirited Europe convinced of the impending end of the world. It reveals him to be a rootless and lonely man who had difficulty getting along with his fellow Europeans and had little or no understanding of the lands he discovered and later governed. The book also dispells many enduring myths, such as how Queen Isabella supposedly pawned her jewels to finance his voyage, tales of mutinous sailors who believed the world was flat, and how Columbus supposedly died in obscure poverty. Read this book & you'll soon discover why there was such a backlash against the 500th aniversary celebration in 1992. There is a fascinating section that deals with the holocaust inflicted against the Indians, with stories and recollections of unbelieveable cruelty and astonishing horrors committed by the Spanish, including Columbus himself. Later chapters deal with his enduring legacy. Included is a look at the pros and cons of the Noble Savage-as environmentalist controversy. Well-written, engaging, and superbly researched. In my estimation, this is THE book on Columbus!

An inevitable book about an inevitable shame

This is a well written and thought provoking book. I read it awhile back (1992) and really enjoyed it. I recommend it highly. However, I would like to share a few thoughts on the topic and approach of the book. In retrospect, it hardly seems fair to blame Columbus and the Europeans. I feel if we must blame something we should blame Human Nature instead.
Sale makes a strong case that the European discovery of distant yet habitable lands across the Atlantic was a huge tragedy for all involved, especially to the Native Americans - the conquered. Granted there was great violence and horror unleashed by this world shaking event, but, I would ask - "How else could this have happened?". The tragedy was inevitable. At anytime during Western history, if such an encounter were to take place, I think it is reasonable to assume, human nature being what it is, that the same tragic results would have occurred. We cannot pretend that Europeans explorers of ANY generation, save our own, would have taken with them a 20th century cultural sensitivity (a commodity that Sale apparently has in great quantity) or anthropological curiosity.
Furthermore, we shouldn't be lulled into believing that because the Native Americans were not as efficient killers as where the Europeans, that they somehow lived in an idyllic peace. Human nature being what it is, we see the same kind of religious fanaticism, the same proto-nationalism, and desperate warfare, egocentric monarchs and power-drunk clerics that mark European history. The Incas, Mayas, Aztecs, Chibcha and Arowat peoples believed THEIR gods to be universal, and THEIR way of life was ordained by heaven. The Incas and Aztecs conquered vast numbers of materially inferior peoples and brought them the "truth" of their religion as well as the benefits of their civilization, ie. trade and protection. Much the same way the Spaniards, Portugues, and French will do in post-Conquest Latin America.
I think that Columbus, for all his flaws and failings is nonetheless heroic simply for having the determination to arrive. If he didn't do it, someone else would have - and the glory and blame would have rested with that person. The conquest of paradise was a shame, but it was an inevitable one - sooner or later someone would have done it. I remember on Columbus Day 1992 going down to see the statue of Columbus in front of Union Station in Washington, DC - only to find "the discoverer" drenched in blood red paint. "what a shame"
For those who are interested in the topic, I highy recommend John Hemming's Conquest of the Incas - An equally fascinating book but one that has the advantage of being even-handed, open-minded and fair.

He became frustrated because he could not penetrate me.As I
lay there looking at the top of the tree house, the game was no longer
fun but painful,then tearful,and at last terrifying. When he was all
done,He spoke to me with a chilling voice: "We have a bond. Don't ever
tell.It would hurt your mother terribly to think a little girl like
you would behave in a manner this way.a guilt sensation flooded
through my little body;I felt betrayed like someone had stolen
something from me,and most of all:I felt that I was a bad little
girl.My innocence was gone forever. This event changed my life.I also
felt the guilt of my father hurting Momma. I dreaded Momma being alone
knowing my father bailed, I didn't want Uncle Cleo to bail on her
too.I never told a soul. I felt I had to protect her and I resented
her for the weight I had to carry to shield her from the reality of my
experience. It later affected our relationship; it came between us
emotionally. She knew maybe because she was not as strong as she
should have been, I made up for her weaknesses. I drowned the pain in
rebellion. I lashed out in pain at everyone I loved including Momma.

The distance grew stronger through the years,but my admiration for her never changed.

My name is Ieisha Fulton. I'm a senior @ Prosser Career Academy in chicago, Illinois. My journalism teacher gave me your book to read and to write a book review on it. When I first saw the book I thought that I wouldn't like it. But when I started to read it I changed my mind. Stuff that I didn't know about the bible and stuff I did know about your book gave me a clearer view. Thank You! At the end of the book the prayer gave me more strength that I really needed.
