About the Author
Elissa Tognozzi (Ph.D. Italian, UCLA) is Senior Lecturer (SOE) in the Department of Italian at UCLA. As Director of Italian Language Studies, she teaches graduate seminars in methods and in technology, coordinates the language program, and supervises the department's teaching assistants. Her upper-division courses include advanced composition, culture, opera, and theater. In addition, she is undergraduate advisor. From 2003 to 2008, she was chair of the AP Italian Development Committee. She was editor of the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) newsletter and is currently the elected representative for AATI for California.

Giuseppe Cavatorta earned a Ph.D. from UCLA in 2004. His current research and scholarly interests include the writings of the Italian neo-avantgarde, Futurism, the partisan war in literature and movies, 19th-century and 20th-century Italian literature, language pedagogy, and the use of technology in teaching. Having previously taught at Dartmouth College, he is currently teaching at the University of Arizona.

This book is a good review of grammar. It is for people who have already learned it once and just need a review. Otherwise, for a beginner, it moves too quickly with too little explanation.

Workbook/lab manual for Ponti Italiano Terzo millenio (ital ed)

Am using this workbook now. Love it. Been taking italian lessons for some years and now working with a small group and teacher. Find this book extremely easy to use, good explanations in English. Am very pleased at its usefulness and good exercises. Would highly recommend.

Not a great book

I had to purchase this book for my college level Italian 3 course. I did not like this book at all. There were terms in the book that had no definitions! I still can't believe there weren't clear definitions for terms used in the book like 'avercela' and 'farcela.' Luckily for me, my professor hated the book just as much and already knew just how horrible it was. She knew that she'd have to spend extra time defining terms that should have been defined in the book. The book does not have an answer key. Of course we would correct our homework in class, but I like to use answer keys see if I'm doing my work correctly. I also use the answer key as a point of reference when I'm studying. Overall, I'm not pleased with the book.

Entertaining

This little novel really is quite good entertainment. Most of the book is just dialogue, reading much like a screenplay, so it is hardly going to rank up there as an all-time great novel. The conversations between Ben and his parents, Ben and Mrs Robinson etc. are tremendously witty, and I found myself laughing out loud on a number of occasions. Ben is a considerably darker character than he appears in the (perhaps superior) film version, being a cynical and disillusioned graduate going through a depression during which he loses interest in just about everything and resigns himself to a life of 'bumming around'. I think I would agree with Douglas Brode, the film critic who wrote of the movie that it was not a story about the generation gap, but rather about a young man who feels as alienated from his own peers as from his parents' generation. This comes across much more strongly in the book, and we also get a very strong sense of WHY he feels so distanced from the rest of his culture - the superficiality and hypocrisy of middle-class America (this is very much a book of its time) is evident, and the reader finds himself disgusted with the shallow attitudes of the milieu in which Benjamin finds himself.

Hard to separate from the movie

As other reviewers have said, this book is only a classic because the movie is. THE GRADUATE is one of my favorite movies, and when I read this book I see Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. Still, this is probably the closest novel/movie adaptation I know of. The book reads like a screenplay. It's heavy on dialogue, most of which was used verbatim in the movie, and there's very little exposition. I found this a great model for writing dialogue, as well as saying a lot in the subtle reaction of a character. But if I hadn't seen the movie, I'm not sure what I'd think.

An American Classic

As for all those extremely negative Swiss reviews, I guess this book and the white suburban upper middle class American sub-culture it so accurately portrays do not come across as funny and as true to people from other cultures. That's understandable; I may not be able to fully relate to an accurate tale of European life. This apparent lack of universality is a valid complaint. But the book sure rings true to me. Benjamin's frustration and rebellion are all part of the normal search for meaning and self-fulfillment that many people go through. It's a classic American coming-of-age story complete with a profound identity crisis. And the discussion between Ben and his father about fighting fires and sleeping with prostitutes in frozen fields -- well, it wasn't in the movie and it makes me laugh out loud each time I read it. That part alone makes the book worthwhile.

Hugo Grotius the great Dutch international lawyer and theorist, is often portrayed as a man who, in his most famous work De June Belli ac Pacis, indulged a passion for the abstract by constructing a theoretical model of international law and international society divorced from reality. In this pioneering book, the work of a team of distinguished Japanese academics, a very different interpretation is proposed and defended. Grotius had in mind not a bookish theory, but above all a practically oriented treatise which aimed at regulating and restraining war. By scrutinizing the text and its key concepts, the authors demonstrate that this was in fact the case and that Grotius was largely successful in his aims. In this powerful and illuminating set of essays the authors also take the opportunity afforded by their study of Grotius to reflect upon the Eurocentric bias of the historiography of international law, tacitly shared even by contemporary academics.

Not user friendly

I have to disagree with the reviewer who said that this book is user friendly. I found it too short and badly written. Many sentences are clumsily phrased and incomprehensible. Basic concepts are explained so perfunctorily (i.e. in one or two short sentences) that it's often impossible for a novice to understand what's being said. I appreciate the authors' efforts to present a streamlined and logical version of Vedic Astrology, but I wish they had presented it in a more digestible form.
I think this book may be adequate for someone already familiar with Vedic concepts, but otherwise the authors' inscrutable prose will, I fear, defeat many beginners (like me).

Excellent Synthesis of Vedic Astrology

The Systems Approach to Vedic astrology is, simply put, the most concise and accurate approach to the subject. This book is a summary explanation of the salient features of Vedic astrology and is very "user friendly."
When I started to study Vedic, I was getting confused by all of the intricacies of various writers, conflicting information on gems and other remedies, which planets are malefics/benefics for which rising sign, which houses are detrimental, etc. David Hawthorne's book cleared all the confusion for me.
If you've been getting mired in the muck of Vedic astrology, give yourself a break and get this book. You will quickly learn how to assess a chart, how to spot weaknesses (and what to do about them), and how to generally predict trends for the future. Numerous solved examples and problems make this volume uniquely suited as a text for an advanced course. This fourth edition has been carefully revised.

best choice - occasional errors - disconcerting jumps

As of early 2006, this is the best available choice for a text on the standard model of the weak force, and the possibilities for its upgrade with the new neutrino discoveries.

The minimum requirements for a reader are an advanced knowledge of engineering-level calculus, basic quantum theory, and great familiarity of the sub-atomic zoo and quantum number bookkeeping.

The volume has occasional errors, like reversing the assignment of the Kayon |Ks> and |KL> mixed states to the symmetric (should be anti-) and antisymmetric (should be sym.) combination of K0 and anti-K0. The math is right, but the explication in the text is wrong. Similar small errors popped up throughout the text, which was annoying in a 3rd edition.

The authors do give a very good overview of (most) possible prior and new versions of the standard model, but for an edition published late in 2000 I expected a lot more about adaptions that accounted well for neutrino mass. There is some there, just not as much as I'd like. I'm hoping in the 4th edition that there will be more discussion on the connundrum of the weak force's preference for left-handed chirality (all the more bizzare now that neutrinos are now thought to have mass). It will be several years before anyone publishes a successor text, since theorizing is still underway, and most particle physicists will be inclined to save their ink until after they've seen results from CERN's new Large Hadron Collider (LHC), to startup in 2007. I reckon that research and textbook writing delays will keep this book current until at least 2009.

The text occasionally has superb, succinct explanations of problems and motivation, but is given to long mathematical digressions into admittedly important crossection derivations. I wanted more chit-chat with my math. It also made disturbingly abrupt jumps in subject, however, the line of reasoning is very orderly, so it's possible to catch up with the authors. The technical English did bother me: being able to read mathematical German helped me a lot to recognize "what they really meant", since the English translation occasionally uses the wrong word, or a term depricated in physicist-English. It looks to me like it could benefit from some smoothing out (1) by a single physicist adding more bridge text between sections and (2) technical editing by a native English speaker, to tidy up awkward idiom. On the other hand, if you just want the straight scoop, and can pull it out of the math with a minimum of coddling and survive an occaional simple mistake, this book is for you.

It would be nice if there were more diagrams, but on the whole, the number of diagrams and pictures is adequate. A few more would make the math sing.

There are occasional biographical notes, which are nice, and the authors give sufficient historical background for the theory, which is good, but best of all is that they do not use "the historical approach" to particle physics. Thank you! The weak interaction is desribed in stages of increasing complexity from minimum adequate to possible next version(s). By coincidence, it's mostly in historical order, but they don't waste your time with no longer relevant background. That was excellent.

this volume is for advanced learner who has already has a background in quantum mechanics. this volume covers weak interaction. another volume quantum chromodynamics covers strong interaction. weak interaction is essential knowledge for starting research in elementary particle physics. it is also a necessary background for strings theory.

How many neutrinos types are there?

The electro-weak part of the Standard Model is one of its best parts.
The Zo, W+ and W- were found and a Nobel Prize awarded ( Weinberg and Salam ).
The neutrinos predicted by EW theory ( electron, muon and tauon neutrinos) are all massless.
What a shock when experimental evidence started showing that neutrinos do have mass.
Are they the same neutrinos ( the EW theory is wrong ? ), are there new neutrino types,
how many neutrinos types are there ?
That important experimental fact is not beeing seriously considered; we see some Physicist say
it will be necessary only a minor correction to the theory to cope with the new experimental facts.
I am afraid that Particle Physics is being done quite lightly, without due regard to experimental facts

Quint gets it

Learn from one of the best in Quint Studer.

He ain't your ordinary hospital consultant. In fact, he probably wouldn't call himself a consultant at all; he's a "Fire Starter" and a "Coach." From a high school GPA of 1.3 to Special Ed teacher to hospital President to Founder of the Studer Group, this man has a genuine passion to make a difference in healthcare and on society. In his first COO role at Holy Cross Hospital, he took his hospital's patient sat scores from 5% to 94% in one year. At his first Administrator position in Baptist Hospital, he decreased employee turnover from 30% to 12% and also founded the Baptist Leadership Institute. It's hard to argue with results like that, and Quint tells us exactly how to do it in our hospitals.

In my view, this book is well-balanced between motivation and practical to-do's. In fact, I think the magic of this book is how well Quint covers both issues: the heart (the emotions/psychology, human nature) and the mind (hard-nosed focus on hard-core results). I think most hospital leaders could pick up this book and actually put some or all of the principles into practice, even in difficult working environments. And that is exactly Quint's intent.

I heard this book mentioned in a podcast as the speakers favorite book. I purchased and read the book and did find many good principles and take aways. I did not realize that this book was written specifically for the Healthcare Profession. I have looked at the "Hardwiring" of the 9 principles presented and they would just not work in my field.
If you are in a hospital or related field this would probably be a 5 star book. I've gleaned some good information and will consider it a good book for my purposes.

A "How-To" for Excellence

Quint has an amazing way of always connecting, always reducing the complexity and showing the way to simplicity in the pursuit of excellence.
His advice and coaching tips are real-world and real-time and shouldn't be thought of as exclusive to healthcare. It would be difficult to make it to the end without identifying one or two leadership-enhancing behaviors....ready to be put to use tomorrow.
Having attended his speaking engagements, I can share that "Hardwiring Excellence" is like an extended conversation with Quint.
