Life changing book

After seeing the way that this little book has changed the lives of so many people (mine included), I could not pass up an opportunity to tell others that it is the best $1.00 you will ever spend.
Kenneth Hagin is a rare man. He actually lives what he says and all with no pretense. This book is a true story of his experience with hell.
After the recent death of a dear loved one who had his life changed by reading this book, it is particularly dear to my family.
This is sincere man with wonderful stories to share of his life that we can all learn a lot from. I encourage you to read this book and look into the life of this rare and wonderful man. He is the kind of man that we did not think existed any more, but he does.
It will challenge you and stir you up. That is guaranteed.....

It really is a good book.

I received this book after watching a play at a church. I had heard of the author and seen many of his books around the house as I was coming up. But this book aloud me to see briefly into the early life of such a well known author. This book allowed me to see that God is able to save whom he wants to save and to use whom He wants to use. I think this book should be read by the saved and the unsaved. I believe that this book though it's tittle speaks of hell will bring sinners to life, and caused the saved to be sincere about the profession in which they have been called.

Brief read on Hell

I went to Hell - by Kenneth Hagin.
Its 32 pages. And I don't think its life changing, I think its
a good introducution to the Subject of Hell.
Ken. Hagin doesn't see alot of Hell, so its not the best source.
YET - its a true account of Ken Hagin dying at age 15.
He died a total of 4 times.
The first three times, I suppose took place on One day in 1933.
When he died he was already attending a Southern Bpt. Church and was already Baptized. Guess what ? When he died - being a Church member and being Water Baptized didn't save him ( according to what he testifies about his experience). He wasn't ushered into heaven when he died at 15 even though he was in Church & Baptized. That's the profound point of the Book. After the 3rd time he dies, and is descending downward and reaches the Pit of Hell, he cries out extremley loud to Jesus. He asks the Lord with every fiber within him to forgive him & cleanse him of all his sins! Immediatley, he is rescued from the Pit of Hell.
RESCUED from the Pit of Hell !!
And his spirit returns to his Body.
After that, Kenneth Hagin dies a 4th time, still at age 15 (almost 16), and he ascends that time. Its proof that his very frantic Prayer to Jesus (while in the spirit in HELL) did make a difference!
And he hears someone tell him to GO BACK!
So his spirit goes back into his body again.
Ken. Hagin seems one of those unique persons that has had more than
one Life After Death experiences. He has experienced both sides.
Mostly, he has experienced being pulled down to the Pit of Hell.
This book is simple. I would highly recommend Youth Pastors use this.
Great for ages: 9-13. However, good for lots of ages.
Its also a small, lightweight booklet if you bought in Bulk to hand-out.

I love how some chapters even had case studies to help you get in the habit of critical thinking. Josh Bryant in "Bench Press" The Science" has written an excellent book for advanced bench pressers and their coaches. The rudiments of bench pressing are not in this book. This is a review of scientific articles on bench pressing. Josh gives us a summary of many articles on bench pressing, and practical take home tips they suggest. Leading up to the articles are fascinating discussions of "raw" lifting vs "bench press shirt" lifting, a history of both raw and shirt bench press records clear back into the 1800's, Josh's comments and results of interveiws with several elite bench pressers, and discussions of bench press controversies with the input of Josh himself, and several other elite bench pressers.

Josh is well qualified to write this book, having long experience in gyms, training all sorts of clients, and specializing in elite bench press coaching, having coached several world record holders in bench press. Josh himself holds the record of the youngest to bench press over 600 lbs.

The information in this book is a distillation of Josh's experience and reading. As such it is a collection of coaching and training techniques unmatched elsewhere. Until I read this book, I rested until I felt ready to lift again. Bryant uses science to explain the optimal rest periods, and dozens more principles.

Ever pick up a half empty milk jug expecting it to be full? Bryant explains how to use this principle to trick your brain into lifting more than it thinks you can.

Is there a hottie in the gym while you lift? Bryant shows the science behind why people perform differently around someone to whom they're attracted.

This book provides SO MUCH researched and proven information on variations to improve your bench! This book is not solely for advanced lifters IMO, novices need to read this book as well to understand how to structure an effective program right from the start, and how to press more effectively. Josh incorporates a lot of referenced studies to prove his training methods, which is what I really like about this book. Great book!!

I recommend all of Christian Larson's books, first published early 20th century. This is one that I regard as an essential. It shows what a deeply insightful and intellectually capable man C. Larson was.
He writes.."Man is made for attainment and achievement; to ever become greater and greater than he is now - that is the purpose of his life; and to promote that purpose he must ever advance in the mastery of self."
Larson explains that we all have infinite possibility, and the power to master all forces, but before anyone can have that privilege without doing harm, one must have mastered one's thoughts and emotions. Then one is truly master, and is never moved by outer things, but is the mover.
Here in this book, Larson discusses how we are to develop and practice the inner forces and powers we have; what the proper use of willpower is, how our powers, mind, and conciousness can be made to work together for the attainment of true supremacy.

"To hold the mind and every part of the mind in this serene strong state, and to hold it there at all times, is a very high art, and is made posssible only through the training of the will to act upon the principle of the real will."

I'm on my second reading of it as a first reading of this book one cannot digest everything (if you are a beginner). It is clear and concise in its explanation but does repeat a little for your grasping of the concepts at different stages. A very good read!

I read this book to my granddaughter's nursery school class. These four year olds loved it! I t is well suited to this age group. The pictures are delightful. The story is simple and engaging. Wonderful picture book!

About the Author
Bienvenido N. Santos (1911–1996) first came to the United States in 1941 as a government pensionado (scholar) at the University of Illinois, Columbia University, and Harvard University. During World War II he served the Philippine government from exile in Washington, DC, before returning to the Philippines in 1946. He came back to the United States in 1958 and attended the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop. In 1965 he received the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in Literature from the Philippine government.

Filipinos In America...A Snapshot From The 1940s and On

People are used to tales of racism and alienation, but mostly in the context of African Americans, extended to other races. Bienvenido Santos' "Scent of Apples" is such a tale, but opens a whole bushelful of experiences and different sorts of "racism," in this collection of self-containing, sometimes interconnected short stories.
To better understand this book, it would be best to understand the circumstances of Santos' writing environment. Santos arrived in the United States in 1941: World War II was flying fast and the Civil Rights Movement was nearly two decades away. The Great Depression, which established and brought into focus a labor struggle between impoverished US citizens, and incoming immigrants working for lower pay, had just passed.
Many of Bulosan's adventures and characters come from the so-called "Bachelor Society" that had long been in place. With such a mass exodus from the Philippines for the money promised by America, the Filipino population in America was made up largely of men. They were called a "Bachelor Society" because of a lack of matrimonial prospects, the idea of marrying women of other races, particularly white, a taboo issue at the time. There were even clubs where these men would go and pay just to dance with white women.
This is exactly why this book is often used as a teaching tool in many Asian American literature classes. It introduces readers to an aspect of pre-Civil Rights racism that is fairly unknown, even to most Filipinos. The fact that Santos' writes extremely well, being able to mix the metaphors of apples, flags and walls into his tales, without making the writing too stylish for his readers.
The standouts from this collection of 16 include:
The title story "Scent of Apples," which shows a Kalamazoo, MI, Filipino farmer fawning over Santos who had just given a speech, awed by not only seeing another Filipino, but such a successful one.
"The Day the Dancers Came" which puts a different spin on "Apples"; instead, a Filipino longing for contact with his countrymen is extremely excited by the prospect of watching then meeting a dance troupe from the Philippines. He is severely disappointed when his affections are not returned, a beautiful turn on race-on-race struggles.
Also notable are "And Beyond, More Walls," and a three-story series that delves into the bachelor society, "Manila House," "A Peculiar Rustling" and "Nightclub."
The history is easy to swallow because of Santos' writing. It's understandable how many who have been introduced to the book in a class setting could be soured by it. It may be more advisable to learn more about the context surrounding the book before reading it on your own. It may even be more helpful, if you do have to read it for class, to simply have a strong interest in the topic. Otherwise, this read will be a brick in your hands.
Recommended for Filipinos interested in a part of their history, and for non-Filipinos interested in immigration and racism issues of the time, or in Filipino history.

The art of subtlety

I only had the chance to read three of the stories from this collection last semester, but I found them to be some of the most intriguing short stories I've seen. Santos is a very capable writer, and it seems one of the more subtle ones I've read in a long time. Particularly in "The Day the Dancers Came," Santos is able to make a universal statement from a very particular situation.

This collection of short stories was my first introduction to Filipino literature. I enjoyed how the author used his own life experiences in the United States to portray how other exiles who were like him felt and how they adjusted to their new life away from home. My favorite story in the collection is "Quicker With Arrows". I like how this story has an unexpected ending.
