And worse, she was a subordinate to a man who ...

Having been in work situations myself where I've had bosses who were abusive, I can totally understand what Mary Capps was up against. They intimidate, degrade, abuse their power. And worse, she was a subordinate to a man who is also a sick, pathetic, evil pervert who had murdered not only men and women, but children! Someone mentioned she was afraid he was going to kill her when he blocked the door to her office and that that wasn't his MO. Duh! Well, she didn't know who he was. I'm sure, had you been standing there in front of this pathetic loser instead of her, the hair may have stood up on your neck too! For the person complaining about the punctuation and spelling -- apparently you didn't read the book. Because if you had you would know that portion was actually the writing of this murderer, using his words and the way he wrote. He's an imbecile. This book was chilling. Had the city officials not done everything they could to save their own hides from more embarrassment, I'm sure Mary would have been able to prove that she was actually being poisoned as she claims. Then when you can tell your home has been broken into several times, I can't even imagine the terror she felt! She was being stalked. I believe her because it adds up.

Borders on Non-Fiction. Written EXTREMELY poorly.
By Mimi
I have the paperback edition of this book, that I bought here in Wichita, so my review is based off of that. The front cover should be an indication of the quality of this book. The photo used on the book is a small pixel photo blown up, which means it's grainy, and barely even recognizable. This book is almost like reading a blog from a very poorly educated person. She writes as she speaks, following no grammar edicate. Hundreds of words in this book are not even spelled correctly, and punctuation is atrocious. These things usually don't bother me much, but they are blatantly obvious and make the book difficult to read.

I am not trying to lessen the experience that Mary Capps claims to have gone through, I have no doubt that Dennis Rader was a horrible supervisor at work. However, based solely on the information supplied in this book, it is very hard for me to believe that Mary Capps was his next intended victim. There is no real evidence to suggest it, and the information she supplies in this book is pure speculation and borders on Non-fiction.

For example, BTK had code names for his "projects" and his code name for his next project was "Broadwater". Mary Capps mother suggsted to her that because she lived in a duplex off of Broadway near 57th Street at the end of a cul-de-sac and a small creek sits behind the
property that she must have been the intended victim. There is no other evidence to support that theory. In fact, during his 30 hour intergation, Dennis Rader informed the police of project broadwater and went into details about his intended victim that had no connection or similarities with Mary Capps at all.

She adds a story of when working with rader, he once locked the door to their office and "wouldn't let her out" so she had to call for help. She thought Rader was going to kill her in her office. That wasn't BTK's MO. He would not kill her in their office with others around while he had been carefully on the run for 31 years.

When reported, those at her job disbelieve her story. She was not believed a lot by those she worked for, which makes me think she has credibility issues, which become very obvious when reading this story. It even struck me odd that she was commonly calling into work and going to doctors for no reason other than to get a letter to skip work. She said her husband was angry with her for doing this. I believe Mary Capps has mental issues and narcissistic tendencies.

My impression after reading this book was because Mary Capps worked in the same office as Mr. Rader, she wanted to cash in on the entire ordeal and wrote this story. Tossing in a chapter (I dare call them that since they are 2-3 pages long) about her personal life, then a chapter of stories about BTK, then a chapter with BTK's police interviews. She claims it took 3 years to write this book, but having read it, it seems more like a school report that took someone took a couple of hours to write and takes just about two hours to read.

If you are into Non-Fiction stories that are poorly written, you may like this book, but if you are looking for true information regarding the BTK case, this book is not that.

Fails to convince
By Hotkat
It is of course a relief that Ms. Capps was not killed by Dennis Rader, and the emotional trauma of having a sociopath like him for a boss is understandable. The city did some outrageous things to her, too. On the whole, though, this was not particularly well written, nor did it really make its case. I would have liked more detail - far more detail, actually - about why she thinks she was the next victim; better proof of possible poisoning (with respect to her, she presented this in a way that made me doubt very much that she was being poisoned), and way, way less information about her irrelevant biographical details. (There is, honest to goodness, a line in there where she randomly mentions two lame jokes that were going around when she was a young woman. It's not connected ... to anything!) The book reads in a rambling, disconnected way and while she does show the stress she was under, in the end her premise is a little hard to swallow. The most interesting parts of the book are the ones that come straight from Rader's testimony - and not from Mary Capps. Those details are horrific. I would say that if you are seeking a cogent book about BTK that puts things in perspective, you really ought to look elsewhere.
