About the Author
Mikiso Hane (1922–2003) was Szold Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at Knox College in Illinois. He enjoyed an illustrious career in the field of Japanese history, publishing 14 books and numerous articles.

Very Dry. History as it should not be written

Mr. Hane has the facts, but the presentation is pretty much just a chronologic recital, without any interpretive depth. Pretty much, it's as elementary school history textbooks used to be written in the 1950's. Nobody will be offended, but everybody will be bored. There's no interpretation or unifying hypothesis/theme. The nicest thing one can say about it is it's rather pedestrian. Not recommended.

An ideal book for one to dip their toe into the cultural and historical ocean that is Japan. Provides context and understanding of this world that is so different from the American experience.

dull, mere accumulation of data

Flat, dull, mere accumulation of data, shallow, uninspired, two-dimensional, boring, non-epical; no memorable characterization or description,
anticlimatic, no grandiose or sublime development or notion, not a single great line or paragraph. It seems a book on trees or bugs, not a book about such a people and country as Japan and the Japanese.
