Quickly Becoming my Favorite Author/Illustrator

Pig hears a squeak on his nose. What could it be? Ah yes, a little bug, and that bug wants to be his friend. Unfortunately, there are many activities they cannot do together because of their sizes. After deciding to part ways, Pig figures out just the right activity for the two of them to do together. Then, they can think of a lot of other activities they can do. Sure, they don't like all of the same things, and they can't do everything together, but that doesn't mean they can't be friends.

I love Alex Latimer. Lion Vs. Rabbit was adorable.Penguin's Hidden Talent had adorable illustrations and a wonderful lesson in the sweet story. I love his illustrations. I love his stories. The pictures are cute, simple, and colorful. The stories are sweet and have a good meaning, while still being fun for kids to read or listen to. I especially loved this one because of the theme. I took it to mean that everyone is different, and that is okay. There are many things you may not agree on or both like to do, but that doesn't mean there are no similarities. You can use your differences to your advantage in some situations, and you can find common interests enough to be friends. Ignore or even celebrate the differences. In the end, there is always something there that will work. A+ book that I am excited to share with others.

delightful picture book

In this laugh-out-loud new picture book from South African writer-illustrator Alex Latimer, we discover that while it's not always easy to be friends with those who are different from us, the result can be worth the extra effort.

Pig is completely flummoxed when, for no reason at all, his nose begins to squeak.What could it be? Time to get out the medical book, of course, to look for Squeaky Nose Syndrome. But it's not in the book (although the book includes Squeaky Knee Syndrome and others). Finally, after much observation, Pig discovers there's a tiny bug on the end of his nose, waving and squeaking at him. Pig can tell by the bug's friendly squeaking that he wants to be friends, but the activities they try --a tandem bike ride (with Pig pedaling and Bug holding on for dear life), a game of chess, making matching sweaters--don't work very well.

They are about to give up, when Pig has a sudden inspiration--a movie! Bug doesn't eat much popcorn, and he can sit right on Pig's ear. Soon they can think of all kinds of things they could do together! They even forget that one of them is big and the other little, until, in a surprise twist, an elephant comes along to ask if he can be friends, too.

Alex Latimer's whimsical cartoon-style artwork is distinctive, with speech and thought bubbles taken from traditional cartoons. The illustrations are created first as pencil drawings, then digitized and finished with a bright color palette with orange and turquoise dominating. The colorful artwork meshes perfectly with his witty and engaging text. The theme of the challenges of friendship with someone different is a universal one, perhaps particularly appropriate in Latimer's hometown of Cape Town, South Africa, where the "rainbow nation" of post-apartheid still struggles with issues of equality for all its citizens, as we continue to do in the United States. This book would work well in a preschool or early elementary storytime, and could encourage discussions about how we get along with others. I could easily see a writing prompt about imagining activities Pig, Bug, and elephant could do together, for example. Latimer's earlier work, Lion vs. Rabbit (Peachtree, 2013), in which a clever trickster rabbit outwits a lion, is also a terrific storytime selection.

Love love love Alex Latimer!

Oooh I love Alex Latimer! My whole family absolutely fell in love with Lion vs. Rabbit and now he's on our permanent watch list. As in, we always watch for any new books by him and try to get them as soon as possible. Well he has a new picture book coming out in August and we're all so excited! (We're especially excited because I got an advanced digital review copy from NetGalley--yay!)

Pig and Small is the story of a pig (Pig) and his new friend, a tiny bug named Small. They enjoy each other's company but it takes them a while to figure out what kinds of activities they can enjoy together without their size difference being a problem. Small tries knitting a sweater for Pig but it's far too little. They try hide-and-seek but Pig can't find Small for days. They try playing chess but it takes too long for Small to move the pieces. They're starting to worry that it's hopeless.

Luckily they figure it out and a beautiful friendship is born. Awwww.

I read this with my four-year-old, Magda, and she and her dad (who was listening from across the room) both had the same reaction. They both thought that Small reminded them of the character of Very Small Beetle, one of Rabbit's "friends and relations" from The House at Pooh Corner. Very high praise indeed!

Magda also pointed out that in the scene in which Small tries to play chess, his opening move is to (try to) move the queen, which isn't a very good opening play so his game of chess probably wouldn't have gone well anyway. (Magda's dad has been teaching her to play chess and both of them are always excited when they see chess mentioned in story books.)

"Cezanne and the Apple Boy" is a new title in Laurence Anholt's children's series about famous artists. Paul, the artist's son, is the apple boy, who goes to visit his father where he paints on a mountainside. Although people scoff at the paintings of Paul Cezanne, his son believes in him. He tells an art critic named Vollard to be careful with his father's paintings because he has invented a new style of painting. In time this opinion is validated by Mr. Vollard and the rest of the world. Through his son's belief in him and his own artistic efforts, the painter Paul Cezanne achieves financial success and is able to live quietly and frugally on his earnings, continuing to paint his beloved scenes and studies. "Cezanne and the Apple Boy" is very sensitively written and contains a number of small reproductions of some of Cezanne's famous paintings. "Cezanne and the Apple Boy" is especially for children ages 4-7.

The Anholt's Artists series is highly recommended for young children

I've been introducing my seven-year-old daughter to some of the world's great artists through picture books and art books, and have found Anholt's Artists series to be informative and inspiring. In Cezanne and the Apple Boy, a young boy goes off to the mountains to visit his father, the French artist and post-Impressionist painter, Paul Cezanne. Cezanne Sr. is viewed as a sort of wild mountain man, a big, hulking person viewed with suspicion by the locals. It is only later that the painter's works find an audience, and he becomes famous.

The story is beautifully told, in a narrative style that appeals to young children, ages 4-8. I highly recommend the Anholt's Artists series as a wonderful way to introduce young children to the world's great artists.

He also has experience as a marketing representative, finance supervisor, and senior analyst, and he has served on a number of boards, cabinets, and planning committees for both nonprofit and for-profit businesses. Through all these roles, he has worked hard to be a strong leader himself, and he believes in identifying and cultivating leadership in others. Richard and his wife, Jeanne, have three daughters: Kelly, Hannah, and Michelle.

And they should never, ever be used to describe Christians.

Dr. Lytle is a business professor, so he comes at this topic from a distinctly business paradigm. But make no mistake: this is not a dry academic treatise. Abandon The Ordinary is an exciting and practical way to develop a distinct, unique brand for your life. In the opening chapter, Dr. Lytle quotes -

"To make ordinary that which God calls life and use your gifts and capacities for nothing is to prostitute great potential. This is such a refreshing viewpoint for so many people who have bought-in to the "cookie cutter" mentality that says every business should operate like this, or every family should look this way, or every Christian must behave like such-and-such.
