About the Author
Michael Dante DiMartino is an American animation director best known as the co-creator, executive producer, and story editor of the animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, both on Nickelodeon. He was born in Shelburne, Vermont.He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design with Bryan Konietzko, with whom he created Avatar. Before Avatar, Mike worked for twelve years at Film Roman, helping to direct King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Mission Hill in addition to his own animated short, Atomic Love. Residence: Los Angeles, CA. Hometown: Los Angles, CA.

Packed with great art just like the earlier artbooks

Going through the book brings back nice memories of watching the animation. Korra's story arc may have its ups and downs but this book presents an overview from the production point of view.

The large hardcover is similar in format to the other Korra artbooks. It has 184 pages. Some places have listed it incorrectly as having only 120 pages. This book is much thicker than that.

Publisher Dark Horse has once again done a fantastic job at filling the book with plenty of concept and production art.

The artworks are sorted by the episodes of the show. There are character designs, background art, concept sketches, storyboards and miscellaneous art from guest arts. Many characters have taken new roles and evolved with a change of look. And it's great to see Toph again (who contributed the funniest moments in the show). The painted background art often come with pencil sketches as well.

There's insightful commentary by Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino and Joaquim Dos Santos. They talk about the design, story and character development. For that, you get a deeper understanding and appreciation for how the animation was made.

All the good things from earlier artbooks apply to this book as well. Needless to say, this is a fantastic book that all fans should get.

I know that there are many people who didn't like The Legend of Korra

I haven't even received the book yet, but the purchase price is absolutely worth it for if nothing else, "Turtleduck Date Night". When I pre-ordered, I wasn't certain if it would be included in the book, but I am ecstatic that it was! It was extremely kind of the publisher to put this artwork in the book for those of us who will never have the opportunity to own one of the limited edition prints of said work of art. I know the series ended last year, but I miss it so much already, and at least with the book, fans will have some added insight into the spectacular fourth book of this engaging series.

I know that there are many people who didn't like The Legend of Korra, and compare it to Avatar: The Last Airbender and find LOK lacking, but I've always held that Avatar: The Last Airbender had to be made, so that birth could be given to The Legend of Korra.

beatnik, not beat

a recent article on diane diprima in the chicago tribune (4/19/2000) called di prima's "memoirs of a beatnik" - "a sort of insider's Beat exploitation book Di Prima wrote in 1968 for Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press in Paris because she needed money badly--and quickly." It goes on to state that "It is mostly accurate, [di prima] said, except for the sex parts."
with that said, i doubt the book aspires to make any type of high-brow feminist or literary statement. the fact that is does make any such statement can be attributed to the time in which it was written. it is basically an account of a young woman venturing out on her own in times when young women did not do such things. young women lived at home, maybe went away to college, met a nice suitable young man, and got married. maybe had a job as a typist in the meantime. sex was not something young women from nice families experimented with.
this is not to say the book does not have its merits. it is artfully written, intelligent, and poetic. it's a great look at the obstacles women faced when they decided to do their own thing, especially when that differed from society's norms. it's a peek inside the counterculture that was growing larger and larger thanks to a certain jack kerouac. all of this raises the book above being just plain old erotica. as a fan of beat writing and culture, i enjoyed the book very much.
of course, the drawback to this book is that someone reading this book without knowledge of the context in which it was published will come away from it with a view of the beats that is as cartoonish and two-dimensional as the rest of society's view was of them at the time. "oh wow, look, the beats were always having sex." - "oh yeah, man, that's what they were about. coffee, sex, and alcohol. (and bongos and poetry and black berets)"
maybe that's why the title of this book is "memoirs of a beatnik," and not "memoirs of a beat." major difference.

Not for the faint of heart. . . .

Not for the faint of heart, Memoirs of a Beatnik was a written-for-hire erotica piece. Di Prima delivers on raunch, providing a wild tale of sexual exploration that begins with the main character (arguably Di Prima, who drew heavily from personal experience) losing her virginity and ends with the character's first pregnancy. Though sex is certainly the book's most prominent feature, Di Prima, a respected poet and one of the few female Beat writers to make a name for herself, also discusses her own artistic development and describes the life of a starving artist in New York in the fifties. Di Prima's no-holds-barred honesty (the sex is real, with all of the funky smells and personal quirks) and her joyful appreciation for the finer details in life (e.g., a good cup of coffee, well-sugared) separates this book from the murky sea of erotica

Sensitive and Compelling Biography of the Lower East Side

Compelled to write after reading the other reviews-- I read this book when it was first published and found the sex (and feminism) secondary. This book read like a biography of most white women who chose to leave home and live on the Lower East Side in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 1990s. What blew me away was the quality of the prose and the parallels with the lives of women (usually White, Italian, or Jewish) I knew who moved there in the 1970s or 80s to recreate themselves. Side by side are Diane di Prima, Madonna di Ciccione (yes The Madonna), and countless women who have had 15 minutes or less of fame in the contemporary media. This book SINGS with the struggles and pain that many women put themselves through to break the yoke of suburbia. Read it and judge for yourself. Unfortunately, it is a tribute to how history repeats itself.

I aced the General Exam using this book. It's a very quick method of learning the answers to the test, as they only show you the correct answers. With this method, you basically memorize the question and answer. Within a week I was consistently getting 85-90% pass rate on practice exams. By week two, I was at 95+%. I missed 2 questions on the actual exam. It will get you through the test, but then it's time to really dig in and learn from Elmers and from the thousands of resources online and in books. This opens the door.

This study guide is just a list of all the exam pool questions with the correct answer listed. While some may find this a good way to study for the test, I don't. There is no explanation of any of the material, in fact, there is no original material at all. These questions are available free online and there are many practice exam websites that will go through all the questions and some will even say why it is the right answer. If rote memorization is your preferred method of study and you don't want to look online, then this book is for you. Otherwise look at ANY of the many better books out there whose authors have actually written something. My favorite is hamradioschool.com by Stu Turner.

About the Author

Eileen Crawley has had a varied professional and academic career which had included working for the Open University as a tutor on its MBA programme for students in Spain, Austria & Belgium, and working also as a Senior Lecturer for the University of Bournemouth Business School. Eileen has also spent a year teaching in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China.

Since returning to Malaysia in 2008, Eileen has been teaching for a number of colleges on their undergraduate and MBA programmes, which are awarded by universities in the UK, France and Australia. She is a Member of the Malaysian Institute of Management.


Stephen Swailes is a Senior Lecturer at Hull University Business School where he teaches international human resource management, selection and reward management. Starting his career in scientific research, Stephen worked in the water industry and later for a research and consulting organization. He has published over 30 papers on commitment, team performance and employee development. He has contributed several book chapters in these areas and his main research interest now is on talent management and cross-cultural influences on employee development.


David Walsh is Principal Lecturer at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University, where he specialises in international human resource management alongside the more strategic aspects of HRM and the employment relationship. As the university's Director of CIPD programmes, David was instrumental in its being designated a CIPD Centre of Research Excellence. He has also contributed to the development of CIPD courses overseas and helped shaped HRM education and professionalism in Russia and Azerbaijan. David has extensive experience as an external examiner both nationally and internationally. His HRM practitioner experience includes working for a large, unionised engineering company; and his research into workplace industrial relations was undertaken through the London School of Economics and Political Science.
