Provocative essays on South African culture

If you are South African, or know anything about South Africa's fascinating cultural history and diversity, this is a delicious read. A collection of provocative (in the philosophical, not the sexual, sense) of essays touching on all South African's soft points. I found myself mentally shouting "Yes" and "Cr&^!!" in equal amounts and wanting to haul the author through my Kindle screen to engage in rigorous debate, and give him a vet klap and a klapsoen, all at the same time. He provokes and then, surgeon-like, dissects preconceptions, suppositions and standpoints. While MacKaiser can't escape his own collection of prejudices, he does occasionally both own up to them and unwittingly allow them to creep into his narrative, allowing them to inform his arguments. Lively and engaging. Use the contents at your own risk at your South African Christmas table this year, to witness a family fiasco. I can't wait for mine...

Highly Recommended

This is an excellent book. Well written, entertaining and challenging.

As someone outside South Africa I found it to be an excellent window on South African political debate, as well as making me think about how some of the questions raised by the author might play out in a UK context. The author's honesty and personal style are charming, and he is a pleasure to read even at moments when you might disagree strongly with what he has to say.

Overall, I was very impressed.

This is an entertaining and thought-provoking set of essays. The pieces are easy to read and reflect the writer's intelligence and insistence on challenging irrationality and intolerance. McKaiser's emotional honesty and openness make the essays a compelling read

It demands that the rules of engagement be completely reworked and all the old niceties of diplomacy be recast. Many of the critical resources of statecraft are now in the hands of the private sector, giant technology companies in particular. About the Author
Adam Segal is the Maurice R. Greenberg senior fellow for China studies and director of the Program on Digital and Cyberspace Policy at the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR). Before coming to the CFR, Dr. Segal was an arms control analyst for the China Project at the Union of Concerned Scientists. There, he wrote about missile defense, nuclear weapons, and Asian security issues. He has been a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for International Studies, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and the Tsinghua University in Beijing. He has taught at Vassar College and Columbia University. An expert on security issues, technology development, and Chinese domestic and foreign policy, Dr. Segal was the project director for the CFR-sponsored Independent Task Force report Defending an open, Global, Secure and Resilient Internet and the author of Digital Dragon: High-Technology Enterprises in China (Cornell University Press; 2003) and Advantage: How American Innovation Can Overcome the Asian Challenge (W. W. Norton; 2011). His work has appeared in the Financial Times, The Economist, Foreign Policy, The Wall Street Journal and Foreign Affairs among others. He currently writes for the blog, "Net Politics." Dr. Segal has a BA and a PhD in government from Cornell University, and an MA in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.

Segal details how the internet has evolved from its academic roots to another frontier in the international power struggle between nation-states. Fair and uncompromising in its analysis, Hacked World Order lets no country off the hook, least of all the United States. Dark in its realistic appraisal of how countries have entered the business of hacking in support of their own interests, the book also suggests a framework for establishing the rules of future cyberwarfare, in order to ensure that the relative stability inherent in the balance of power in the physical world has its counterpart in the virtual world. A fascinating, illuminating, and compelling read.

What happens when technology erodes the concept of the nation-state?

The Information Age or, as this author describes it, the Digital Age, dominates the early 21st Century. Change, brought about by computers, sensors, the internet, and the exponential interconnection of the globe because of our implementation of these technologies, races ever faster forcing individuals and societies to adjust at an ever increasing pace. I set out to explore these phenomena through 3 books: Information - A Very Short Introduction; The Hacked World Order; and, Only Humans Need Apply. This is the second of those 3 books. It met my expectations.

Adam Segal, the author, is, among other roles, the Director of the Program on Digital and Cyberspace Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations. In this role, he has been a close observer of the political, military, economic and social effects of the global expansion of cyberspace. His interest, as is perhaps not surprising, is in the effect of governmental policy on the changes wrought by the Digital Age. If this is an interest of yours, you will be rewarded; but even if not, his focus on policy is not so exclusive that you can't come away with new insights.

As frequently occurs in such a review, Stuxnet provides an early example of the changed nature of the competition between nations. To his credit the author does not dwell excessively on Stuxnet perhaps in the expectation that his readers are already familiar with this event. His analysis also looks at the rise of other powers to challenge U.S. dominance of the internet. China and Russia clearly seed to usurp dominance, but Brazil does as well. If you're interested in how this is occurring, the book provides guidance.

The impact of Edward Snowden's revelations courses throughout the book. The effect of these disclosures on diminishing American moral authority cannot be discounted. The book examines this effect carefully and, I think, fairly so. It is not an America is bad and I'll show you how hatchet job. I appreciated the, what appeared to me, fair treatment of a complex issue. Balancing moral values and national interest (with national interest being affected by the soft power conferred by morality) is not simple.

Another matter that I was somewhat aware of, but insufficiently understood, is the difficult relationship between American national interests and U.S. based multinationals such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, IBM and others. Trying to run one a dynamic technology-focused company doing business across the globe (and Europe can be as challenging as China) with the U.S. government seeking to use your company for its purposes undoubtedly challenges these companies' management. Read the book to see how.

In my mind Mr. Segal provided some useful takeaways for the Digital Age. The U.S. cannot expect to dictate the architecture of the internet; it will greatly affect the architecture, but other players will affect this architecture as well. China and Russia will continue to hack into U.S. information systems no matter what they say. Defenses against this must be undertaken and will be ever evolving. On page 226 of the hardback he quotes Jessica Mathews, the former president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, saying "Absolutes of the Westphalian system - territorially fixed states where everything of value lies within some state's borders; a single, secular authority governing each territory and representing it outside its borders and no authority above states - are all dissolving." This may be the most important takeaway.

The book met my expectations for this part of my investigation of the Information Age. I recommend it highly.

If you Work in National Security and Foreign Affairs, you need to read this book!

This is an exceptionally good treatment outlining the rapid and complex ways in which international security relations are being morphed by the effects, impacts and dynamics of cyberspace. While Henry Kissenger's New York Best-selling World Order devotes one small chapter at the end to the impact of cyberspace, Segal devotes his whole book. While I love Kindle books, I only get novels. For my serious professional reading, I have to buy the hardcopy. Why? Because I write all over them, I underline, I make margin comments. I judge how valuable a work is to me by the density of these underlinings, notes etc. I have WRITTEN ALL OVER Adam Segal's book. Understanding about this set of impacts and foreshadowing the international security relations future is a critical for any military or civilian government professional involved in national and homeland security.

This is a great recipe book about low grab dump meals. It contains 20 grams or less of net carbs per serving. These recipes are very easy to prepare and really good for our body. It will change your lifestyles. It's really delicious. I found so many new low crab dump meal recipes in this book. Great book to try your hand at dump meal recipes, it's just as the title reads! Sarah Spencer, who lives in Canada with her husband and two children, describes herself as an avid foodie who prefers watching the Food Network over a hockey game or NCIS! She is a passionate cook who dedicates all her time between creating new recipes, writing cookbooks, and her family, though not necessarily in that order! Sarah has had two major influences in her life regarding cooking, her Grandmother and Mama Li. She was introduced to cooking at an early age by her Grandmother who thought cooking for your loved ones was the single most important thing in life. At last, dump meals that don't ruin my low carb diet!

I've wanted to try dump recipes for a long time, but I just couldn't use most of the ones I found because they were either sweets or carb laden casseroles full of noodles and such. This is a great cookbook for those of us trying to go low carb without feeling deprived. I want to try everything I've seen so far, and I tend to be a bit picky, usually. Thanks for letting the low carb crowd get in on the dump meal craze. Very helpful book!

Most complete book on memory - ever

I purchased this book along with six other memory and fast-reading books. This one stands out because it is extremely well organized. Each chapter is divided into sections that are typically two pages long. In most cases, each section has a sidebar or one complete page dedicated to either an exercise or a case example. This book is a joy to read, because it is written in a straightforward style and is beautifully illustrated.
It is organized into six chapters.
1. A brief history of memory (greeks, romans and modern times)
2. How memory works
3. How to improve your memory
4. Discovering memory techniques
5. Memory techniques for everyday life
6. Gain fulfillment through memory
The second chapter tells you how neurotransmitters, axons, dendrites, left and right brain, brainwaves, short and long term memory, sleep, drugs and aging work and affect your memory.
The third chapter tells you how important the elements of imagination, association, location, concentration, observation, repetition and health are to improving your memory.
The fourth chapter explains the techniques themselves in proper learning order - mnemonics, visual pegs, story, journey (the most powerful method for me), dominic system, number-shape system, mind-maps.
The fifth chapter applies the techniques to everyday life and tells you which ones are better suited to which problems.
The last chapter elaborates on why memory improvement is not just an exercise in itself to acquire robotic memory. Rather it tells you how your life can be enriched by keeping your mind young and how to cope with life's demands and past memories. This is one of the chapters I enjoyed most.
As a conclusion, I recommend this little jewel for many reasons. First, it covers the subject very broadly - it does not just give you short recipes, it is a complete treatise on memory. It is a mini memory encyclopedia - the topic is condensed in 160 pages.
Second, it is really a marvelous book, the best book I have read on this subject and quite probably one of the most valuable ones I have gotten ever for my life. It is one of these books you keep in a preferred corner in your bookshelf.
Third, it is truly useful. Although there may be more memory techniques, the ones in this book are the most important ones and are more than enough to keep you busy memorizing.
Fourth, it eliminates the common belief that memory deteriorates with age. It actually worsens with LACK OF USE. You will learn that memory is like a muscle - the more you use it the better it gets. I got this book because I was determined to work on keeping my mind young "before it is too late". I discovered that it is never too late and, unlike muscles, the mind is the most powerful and malleable muscle of all. You just have to keep it busy with many interests.

Do you think it is impossible to remember a difficult name or a phone number? Can everyone learn to remember? Yes, everyone can learn to remember! The author of this book (Dominic O`Brien) dropped out of school at an early stage because his memory was too weak. Several years later, he created a technique that made it possible to remember almost everything. Now he is six-time world memory champion and a master of memory.
In this book, Dominic O`Brien tells you how to apply his memory systems. With simple systems, based on imagination, location and association, you will be able to remember long digit numbers, names, facts and even a deck of card!
Here is ,for example, on system for remembering numbers: 1=a 2=b 3=c 4=d and so on. What do you think of ,when you hear 33 ? Well, 33 is CC, so I think of Charlie Chaplin. You see ,this system is both easy and funny!
In addition, yo will also learn some interesting facts about our brain, long term and short term memory, speed reading and how to draw a mind map.
In a study situation, you will probably benefit a lot from this book. According to Dominic O`Brien, our memory is almost like the universe, its unlimited. Belive it or not, but your memory will not decline with years.
There are three good reasons for you to buy this book: Number one: Dominic O`Brien is a true memory expert. He knows how to develop a powerful memory, and encourage you to do right that!
Number two: He has created his own systems, and they are really effective. Number three: The book is pretty,detailed and well written. It is a pleasure to read!

An effective book from a memory champion

Dominic speaks on his terms about the history of memory, memory functions and works, improving your memory, health and memory, memory and senses, mnemonics, crossword puzzles, journey method, number-shape system, Dominic system, names and faces, speed reading, mind maps, and much more.
This book is not extremely lengthy but covers the subject of memory-and memory improvement-very effectively. The pages of this book are also colorful and picturesque.
I was pleased to read on the usefulness of the number shape system that Dominic employs, with the Dominic system. In addition, the Dominic system is very masterful. To add, Dominic's writings on memory, and the senses are fresh and insightful.
Any person reasonably interested in memory must read this book. This book is a pinnacle in my top 10 list.

Monchi, the 10-year-old narrator of Rodr!guez's (Am?rica Is Her Name) well-intentioned if oversimplified cautionary tale, describes his encounter with a gang. When Clever, Monchi's neighbor and a gang member, announces, "It's about time you joined the Pee Wees," Monchi is gratified that the older boy "wanted to be friends and wasn't going to hurt me." Thus, he accepts the invitation, despite warnings from his older girl cousin, Dreamer: "I used to hang around with Clever and them guys.... I don't like some of the things they do." On the night he is to be "jumped in" (beaten for 60 seconds by fellow gang members) as a rite of initiation, a rival gang shows up with guns and shoots Dreamer, who has come to dissuade her cousin from participating. After Monchi learns that she will live, he decides not to join the gang. Unfortunately, all the episodes in the bilingual story get equal weight (a visit with Monchi's uncle, a conversation with Dreamer about a knife in Monchi's possession, etc.) so that the story never builds to the climax when Dreamer is shot. Similarly, Galvez's portraits are lifelike but fall short of creating tension. For example, in a spread that foreshadows Clever's malevolence, Clever gets lost in the gutter. The message is valuable, but gets muddied in the telling. Eve Bunting's Your Move, illus. by James Ransome, offers a more forceful picture book treatment of the same subject. Ages 6-up. (Aug.)

Grade 2-5-"Gangs" is the theme of this bilingual picture book. Ten-year-old Monchi likes to read books and write poetry and lives in the barrio. He is invited to join the Encanto Locos' Pee Wees, the neighborhood gang, by an older member, Clever. In order to join, Monchi must prove himself by first witnessing another initiate as he gets "jumped in" (beaten by five gang members for 60 seconds). Then he is taught how to dress, tie a bandanna on his head, put his placa (name) on the school wall, steal a bicycle, and buy a knife. However, the night Monchi is to be jumped in, his older cousin shows up to plead with him not to join and she is shot by the rival gang as they drive by. Fortunately, she recovers. Soon after, Clever shows up with a handgun and a plan for revenge. In the end, with support from his family, Monchi makes the right decision. Rodriguez's moral is evident but not spelled out, making this book a springboard for discussion. Galvez's realistic illustrations of the characters reflect their strong emotions.

(1993) tells a picture-book story of 10-year-old Ramon (Monchi), who is pressured to join a gang in the barrio. Monchi is reluctant to become part of the violence. He likes to read and write poetry; he likes helping his uncle fix cars; he's friends with his older girl-cousin Dreamer. Partly through fear, he does go along with Clever, the older boy in the Encanto Locos gang, and Monchi finds it's fun to get respect at school. He learns to steal a bike. He buys a knife. When Dreamer tries to stop him, she is shot in rival gang crossfire, and, in his shock and sorrow, Monchi breaks free and finds a true mentor in his uncle. The violence is not exploited, but it's there: the beatings, the lure of power, Dreamer in a wheelchair after the shooting. In the climax, Monchi refuses to be drawn into the fight for revenge. The message is spelled out, but Rodriguez's personal experience, as a teenage gang member and now as an adult counselor, gives the story immediacy. The text is bilingual, first English, then Spanish, on each page, with richly colored, full-page realistic paintings that show a diverse Latino cast in the dramatic narrative. Must have for any teacher

This book is the best book I have read dealing with the pressures and dangers of joining a gang. The author gives you a realistic view of what it means to be a part of a gang. The story follows a young boys quest to belong. You get to watch this young boy slowly drift away from his family and friends into the gang lifestyle, until something tragic makes him realize that it doesn't have to be this way. This book does an incredible job of making you realize all that kids go through when faced with pressure to join gangs. This is a book that I am going to use in my classroom to open the eyes of my students. I believe this book is informing and empowering kids to not join gangs.

Little Book...Big Idea

It was the first time I heard the echo of my voice all semester. Why did my own words seem so loud to me? It was because it was the first time I had them all quiet at once. Something had been momentarily stirred in my room of under-supported kids; the kids we typically leave behind. It was their story. Or it was their uncle's story. Maybe the story of a friend. But, many knew these characters. Many knew these issues. And they had finally let me in. With a book, no less. The best way for a teacher to sneak inside. And I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Though it's a picture book, never does it talk down to the reader. It treats all who enter its pages with dignity and respect. And my middle school students returned to it over and over again. That's the true sign of a great book.
