For me, that is a satisfying combination; nowhere does this book strain to hold together as a unified expression. Brownderville is aesthetically bold-inventive, often electric, in his phrasing.  Greg Alan Brownderville is an assistant professor of English at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. His poems have appeared in Oxford American, Prairie Schooner, Arkansas Review, and other publications.

What a voice!

Greg Brownderville is articulate and heartfelt, and Gust has more good poems than in any ten other recent collections I've read. He has a mind for metaphor, the really cool ones that linger in your brain long after you've finished the poem. Whether he's talking about fishing or religion or sex or some combination thereof, he knows his stuff. For fans of narrative verse, or just those who like colorful characters, this is a rare treat.

An Important Work

Beautiful beautiful beautiful. If you're a poet, definitely should read. If not a poet, also should read.

This is some of the best poetry i have read in a while, as good as the top writers in America today and those in the past as well. You'll find a lot in contemporary poetry anthologies that aren't as good as some of these.

I think writing like this is vital so that more people can enjoy the art of poetry. i think writers often make their poems far too abstruse and difficult to read and relate to, but Mr. Brownderville proves you can have "professional" poems that are still visceral, relevant and accessible.

The long poem "Holy Ghost Man" is an impressive achievement, an incredibly moving narrative about religion, sex and finding ones moral compass.

Mr. Brownderville is a huge talent, an important American Poet. This book should have 20 reviews by now in my opinion.

My Favorite Book of Poetry

Since hearing Brownderville read from Gust and buying the book, I've pressed copies into the hands of several friends. Only some of them are poetry buffs, but every one has loved his work. His poems are both smart and accessible, a combination too rare in poetry. They're musical, and they stick in your memory. They're rich in the details of his native Arkansas, but they have much to say about the larger world. This book is more than worth the money. It's exciting to discover a writer on the way up, as Brownderville is, but already producing at the highest level.

About the Author
Anne Huff is Visiting Professor of Strategy and Innovation at the TUM Business School in Munich, Germany, where she is helping organize research on open innovation that crosses traditional organizational boundaries, product-service fusion and leadership systems.  She was Founding Director of the Advanced Institute of Management Research (AIM), a UK wide management research initiative with offices based at the London Business School, and continues to be a visiting AIM fellow at LBS.  She is also a visiting professor in the Communications Department of the University of Colorado, and had prior appointments at the University of Illinois, and UCLA.  She earned a BA from Barnard College (philosophy), as well as an MA (sociology) and PhD (management) from Northwestern University.  

Her research interests focus on sustained innovation and strategic change; both are seen as dynamic processes of interaction among firms and as cognitive processes affected by the interaction of individuals over time.  Recent books include Mapping Strategic Knowledge. Sage, 2002 (edited, with Mark Jenkins), When Firms Change Direction. Oxford University Press, 2000 (with James O. Huff), and  Writing for Scholarly Publication (Sage, 1998).    In 1998-99 Anne was President of the Academy of Management, an association of management researchers with 16,000 members worldwide; she held associated leadership positions from 1995 to 2001.  In August 2003 she received the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division of that association.  She serves on the boards of several professional organizations and journals.

"Research as a conversation" metaphor; highly recommended book

The core message of this book is that research is an ongoing conversation. The metaphor is one of the most useful, yet unobviously obvious idea that is worth its weight in gold for anyone who peer reviews research or does scientific research. While the other, negative reviewer might argue that there no need to buy this book if that's all it says, it's the book pragmatic guidance in bringing the idea to life that makes it valuable. This book shows how to walk the walk.

She argues that if a new research paper adds something new to an ongoing scientific "conversation," it is worth accepting. In almost a decade of conducting academic research, it is this conversation metaphor that has helped me become a constructive reviewer of others' research, and in turn, plausibly a better researcher.

This skill of "joining the conversation" was the one seemingly-obvious but critical thing that my years of doctoral training never taught me. It took me years to realize and fully appreciate the value of this book's core message. Which is why I think that it is worth every penny of its thirty seven dollar price.

Highly recommended for anyone who conducts and evaluates scientific research.

Great advice to get published

This is written for academics in the field of organisational theory (and adjacent fields). The book provides very useful advice of how to get your manuscript published.

The book doesn't say much what is really a good manuscript because the book is about getting published. That is not the same as having something valuable to say. If you have a crappy manuscript and adhere to the advice in this book, you still increase your chances of having your manuscript published. If you have a good manuscript you still need to adhere to the advice in this book. So you still need to read this book.

If your ambition level is to write a good manuscript (in addition to being published) you should also read Van de Ven's "Engaged Scholarship" (quite simple, practical) and Elster's "Explaining Social Behaviour" (more complex, theoretical, abstract) plus relevant articles that you are exposed to only in good PhD programmes.

A valuable starting point for any budding academic

A very well organised book that does well to frame itself for both experienced academics and those starting out. I particularly enjoyed the exercises, these added a great deal of value to the starting process of writing and motivated me to start writing! (almost fools you into doing it, before you know where you are theres a half decent paper in the making on your desk in front of you).
I have only one issue with the book as it stands - and this is small. The chapter on presentation (9) seemed a little out of place (as in conference presentation not written), perhaps a stronger link between this and its relevance for academic writing may have been made.
Otherwise a very engaging book thats written to be easily digested and acted upon. I defy anyone having read this not to walk away feeling energised about the prospect of getting your ideas out into the academic community.
More please ! perhaps a text for PhD candidates specifically?

Band structure engineering

In solid state/condensed matter physics, there is somewhat of a gap between introductory books and research papers on actually doing cutting edge work in band theory. Singleton attempts to remedy that with a text aimed squarely at honours-level students (in the UK), which is equivalent to senior level undergrads in the US.
He starts with the simple Drude and Sommerfeld models. These are historically important, and also don't need much in the way of computation. They could not have, actually, since they were devised at a time (pre-1940s), when electronic computers were unavailable. Singleton then quickly moves to the tight-binding model, which leads directly into modern band structure.
From this, he shows how we get semiconductors and insulators. Then, how nowadays we can do better than nature. Instead of restricting ourselves to band structures of bulk compounds, we can synthesise heterostructures, and thus manipulate the resultant band structures in a quantitative fashion, giving novel and useful properties on a bulk scale.
This might also motivate some readers to do research into such new materials.

Pretty good introductory solid state physics book

This book is a good bridge between very abbreviated descriptions of solid state physics found in most EE semiconductor device books and a tome like Ashcroft and Mermin's standard Solid State Physics book. It is mainly descriptive and elementary (the Boltzmann transport equation is barely mentioned). I like it because the author often plainly says useful things like the effective masses of electrons and light holes are similar, or that the heavy hole masses are pretty much the same for common semiconductors. The coverage of optical properties is minimal, apparently by design since the book is part of a series (Optical Properties of Solids by Fox).

I found the appendices to be useful for references. The text and derivations in the main part are short on detail. So the main text is probably better suited as a quick guide reference for people that already have an understanding of the material. Or for those who really want to get a better understanding by working out all the derivations on their own.
